If you’ve been struggling with dyshidrotic eczema and feel like you’ve already tried everything — cutting out foods, buying expensive creams, and searching endlessly online for answers — this article may completely change the way you think about your skin.
Most people are told that hand eczema is simply caused by “inflammation” or food sensitivities. So naturally, they start removing more and more foods from their diet, hoping their skin will finally calm down.
But what if that approach is actually keeping you stuck?
In this article, I share my personal journey with painful dyshidrotic eczema and the surprising discoveries that helped me finally start healing. You’ll learn why hand eczema may have more to do with your gut, digestion, nutrient status, and immune system than simply avoiding certain foods.
I’ll also explain:
- Why restrictive diets can sometimes backfire
- The hidden gut issues that may trigger dyshidrotic eczema
- Why nutrient deficiencies matter more than most people realize
- The one food I temporarily recommend removing
- What a more supportive hand eczema treatment approach can look like
Most importantly, this article will help you feel hopeful.

416: My Hand Eczema Journey (Lessons I Wish Everyone With Dyshidrotic Eczema Knew) {FULL TRANSCRIPT}
If you have dyshidrotic eczema and your whole plan is to keep cutting foods out of your diet, I need to tell you something important:
That approach may actually be making your skin worse.
I know that might sound surprising. Especially when the internet keeps telling you that sugar, dairy, eggs, or gluten must be causing your hand eczema.
But after struggling with dyshidrotic eczema myself (and after helping thousands of clients with chronic skin problems) I’ve learned something very important:
Your skin issue may not actually start with the food itself.
And if you only focus on removing foods, you could miss the deeper reason your dyshidrotic eczema keeps flaring.

My Experience With Dyshidrotic Eczema
I’ve often described dyshidrotic eczema as a living hell.
The tiny blisters, the itching, the cracking skin, and the burning made everyday life incredibly hard. This type of hand eczema often shows up on the fingers and palms and can even affect the nails.
At first, I noticed a small patch on one finger.
Then it spread.
Soon my hands became so painful that even simple things hurt… Turning a doorknob, washing my hands, showering, and even shaking someone’s hand.
I had to stop teaching cooking classes (from all the glares I got, despite the gloves I wore).
I stopped volunteering at a cat shelter because my gloves would rip from handling the cats.
I even stopped going to the gym to work out, because touching things meant I needed to wash my hands, which was terribly painful.
Emotionally, dyshidrotic eczema crushed my confidence.
People would pull away when they saw my hands. I felt embarrassed, isolated, and exhausted.
If you’re dealing with hand eczema right now, please know…
You are not alone.
And there is hope.

Why My Dyshidrotic Eczema Wasn’t Really About Food
By the time my hand eczema started, I had already been gluten-free, dairy-free, and egg-free for years.
So when people told me to eliminate more foods, it didn’t make sense.
I had already removed the “common triggers.”
And yet the dyshidrotic eczema covering my hands continued to get worse.
That’s when I realized something important:
Maybe the bigger issue wasn’t the food.
Maybe something deeper was happening inside my body.

The Gut-Skin Connection and Dyshidrotic Eczema
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that gut health matters far more than most people realize.
And I don’t just mean digestion.
Your gut contains trillions of bacteria and other organisms. Some are helpful. Some are not.
When unhealthy organisms grow out of control, they can create inflammation inside the digestive tract. That inflammation can affect the immune system — and for many people, the skin becomes the place where that stress shows up.
In my case, it showed up as dyshidrotic eczema on my hands.
Every time I experienced a major flare, there was something deeper happening in my gut. And once I addressed those underlying issues, my skin finally started to calm down.

Why Restrictive Diets Can Backfire With Hand Eczema
Now, let me be clear.
Food matters.
But there’s a huge difference between supporting your body with nourishing foods and becoming trapped in endless food restriction.
Many people with dyshidrotic eczema become afraid of food because they’re desperate for relief.
But here’s the problem:
The more foods you remove, the harder it can become to get the nutrients your body needs to heal.
Your skin cells need nutrients.
Your immune system needs nutrients.
Your gut needs nutrients.
And your body cannot create most nutrients on its own. You have to get them from food.
Plus, there’s the added risk of developing IgE food allergies to foods you’ve removed from your diet for about a year or more… which is not good.
So while restrictive diets may temporarily improve hand eczema symptoms for some people, they can also leave the body depleted over time.

A Missing Piece in Hand Eczema Treatment
Another thing many people don’t realize is that digestion affects nutrient absorption.
Even if you eat healthy foods, your body still has to:
- break food down
- absorb nutrients properly
- move those nutrients into your cells
If digestion is compromised, you’re probably not going to absorb nutrients all that well.
And if unhealthy gut organisms are present, they may actually steal nutrients from your food before your body can use them.
This is one reason why many people feel frustrated with their hand eczema treatment plan.
They’re trying so hard, but their body may need deeper support.

The One Food I Usually Remove for Dyshidrotic Eczema
People are often surprised when I say this, but I generally do not recommend removing a long list of foods.
There is usually only one food I ask clients with dyshidrotic eczema to temporarily avoid:
Gluten.
Why?
Because research shows gluten can increase intestinal permeability, sometimes called “leaky gut,” even in people without celiac disease.
If the gut is already inflamed, gluten may make it harder for the gut lining to calm down.
But notice I said temporarily.
The goal is not lifelong restriction unless it’s truly necessary.

Can Too Much Restriction Make Hand Eczema Worse?
Yes, sometimes it can.
When foods are removed for very long periods of time, some people become even more reactive when they try to add those foods back in.
I’ve even seen adults develop severe reactions after years of restriction.
And beyond the physical side effects, food fear can take over your life. (And in fact, research proves this to be true! More on that HERE.)
You shouldn’t feel like you’re going to panic every time you eat.
And you shouldn’t feel afraid of food all the time because you flared up despite eating “safe” foods.
A good hand eczema treatment plan should help you feel relieved and less focused on your skin — not more trapped.
And it must be built on WHY you have this raging inflammation so that you can deal with the unique problems brewing under the surface.

What I Would Focus on Instead for Hand Eczema Treatment
Hand eczema is truly an inside-out solution! I’ve seen this again and again in my virtual clinic with the clients we help fix their skin.
If you’re struggling with dyshidrotic eczema, these are the areas I would focus on first:
1. Support Digestion
Stomach acid and digestive function matter more than most people realize.
Your digestive system needs to break food down properly so your body can use the nutrients you eat.
Use my Low Stomach Acid guide to discover if you have enough stomach acid.
And then add in a boost for your digestion with Digest Aid full-spectrum enzymes!
2. Improve Gut Health
Hidden gut issues can cause significant inflammation.
That’s why it can be helpful to investigate whether underlying gut imbalances are contributing to your dyshidrotic eczema.
My favorite gut binder for toxins is HistaGut Relief IgG!
3. Rebuild Nutrient Stores
Healing hand eczema requires nutrients.
Your immune system, skin barrier, and detox pathways all depend on vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients to function well.
Get an additional nutrient boost with the Ultra Skin Support Multi!
4. Support your Liver Detox
Your liver helps process toxins and inflammatory compounds.
When the gut is overwhelmed, the liver often has to work harder too.
This can be especially important for healthcare workers, dental workers, hairstylists, cleaners, and others who are constantly exposed to harsh soaps and cleaning chemicals.
My #1 best-selling liver support supplement is called P2 Detox Balance, which has been a game-changer for so many with skin issues.

Dyshidrotic Eczema FAQ
What is dyshidrotic eczema?
Dyshidrotic eczema is a type of hand eczema that causes small itchy blisters, cracked skin, peeling, and painful inflammation on the hands and fingers.
What is the best hand eczema treatment?
The best hand eczema treatment often involves more than just creams or eliminating foods. Supporting gut health, digestion, nutrient status, and the skin barrier may all play important roles. My virtual clinic works with clients all over the world to identify and stop the root causes driving hand eczema. CLICK HERE to get started working with us!
Can food cause dyshidrotic eczema?
Food may contribute to symptoms for some people, but dyshidrotic eczema is not always caused by food alone. Gut health, inflammation, stress, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental triggers may also play a role. Use my Skin Rash Root Cause Finder Guide to help you figure out YOUR root cause!
Should I eliminate certain foods for hand eczema?
Not necessarily. Elimination diets increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies, long-term food fear, and can even trigger IgE food allergies to foods you previously tolerated. As a clinical nutritionist, my preference is to keep as many foods in your diet as possible while we work on the actual root causes (it’s often NOT food). My team and I work with clients to figure out your root cause puzzle, reintroduce foods, and rebalance your system to fix our skin. Check out our clients’ experiences working with us to see what’s possible for you!

There Is Hope for Your Skin
I know how discouraging dyshidrotic eczema can feel.
I know what it’s like to hide your hands and wonder if your skin will ever improve.
But I also know this:
Healing is possible.
Even if you’ve tried many hand eczema treatment approaches already.
Sometimes the biggest breakthrough happens when you stop obsessing over removing more foods and start asking deeper questions about what your body truly needs.
That’s where real healing often begins.
