Key Takeaways

  • Dermatographia rash (also called dermatographism or skin writing) is a type of urticaria where pressure or scratching can trigger raised, itchy welts.
  • Having dermatographia hives or chronic urticaria is often mistakenly blamed on histamine intolerance.
  • A low-histamine diet may help reduce your overall histamine load, but it doesn’t necessarily address WHY your system is so reactive to histamine.
  • Potential contributors to histamine intolerance reactivity varies from person to person, which is why there’s no single dermatographia treatment or root-cause protocol that works for everyone.
  • Antihistamines are a common treatment for dermatographia rash, but they will not ultimately stop the underlying triggers.

If you’ve got a dermatographia rash (aka. skin writing) or chronic hives, you’ve probably heard that histamine is the problem.

Maybe you’ve even gone down the histamine intolerance rabbit hole, cutting out high-histamine foods, taking antihistamines, trying DAO supplements + avoiding anything that might trigger another itchy flare.

And yet… your skin STILL reacts.

So does that mean you have histamine intolerance? Not necessarily.

Because there’s another possibility that I see in my clinical practice that can look a LOT like histamine intolerance… something I call histamine overload. Understanding the difference could completely change how you think about your dermatographia hives + what may actually be driving them.

That’s exactly what happened to Sonia. She was convinced histamine intolerance was behind her dermatographia + increasingly restricted her diet in an attempt to control her symptoms.

But once we started looking beyond food + histamine and investigated the bigger picture, we uncovered several hidden factors contributing to her histamine overload.

Sonia’s dermatographia rash is now completely gone, and she’s been able to reintroduce foods like tomatoes + aged cheese AND traveled to hot, sunny Mexico without her skin flaring!

Here’s what was going on, and how her dermatographia stopped.

taking a trip to Mexico after fixing skin rashes

428: Dermatographia Rash + Chronic Hives: Is Histamine Intolerance Really The Problem? {FULL TRANSCRIPT}

Sonia couldn’t wear tight clothes anymore.

Even yoga pants were a problem because the pressure of the fabric against her skin could trigger terribly itchy welts within minutes.

She’d already cut out food after food trying to keep her dermatographia rash under control without much improvement.

And after doing her own research online, she became convinced that she had histamine intolerance.

Which meant even MORE food restrictions.

But today?

Her skin no longer reacts to pressure or heat. She’s brought back foods she used to avoid (including tomatoes + aged cheeses). And when I last heard from her, she’d traveled to Mexico for her 30th birthday where she enjoyed the sun, heat + whatever foods she wanted…

Without a flare.

So what changed?

It turns out that histamine wasn’t exactly the problem Sonia thought it was.

And if you’re dealing with dermatographia, chronic hives (chronic urticaria) or other histamine-driven skin reactions, understanding this distinction could completely change where you focus your attention.

Because instead of having true histamine intolerance, you may be dealing with something I call histamine overload.

And YES — there’s a really important difference.

woman wondering what a Dermatographia Rash is

What Is A Dermatographia Rash?

Dermatographia (also called dermatographism or skin writing) is a type of urticaria where pressure against your skin can trigger raised, itchy welts.

You may notice these dermatographia hives after scratching your skin with a fingernail or even from something as seemingly harmless as tight clothing. For someone like Sonia, waistbands + tight workout clothes were enough to make her skin explode with itchy welts.

And because dermatographia falls under the same general umbrella as urticaria and chronic hives, histamine naturally becomes part of the conversation.

So if you start Googling your symptoms, it’s pretty easy to end up reading about histamine intolerance.

Then comes the low-histamine diet.

DAO supplements.

Antihistamines.

And an increasingly shrinking list of foods you feel “safe” eating.

But there’s a problem with assuming that your dermatographia rash automatically means you have histamine intolerance.

swimming pool analogy about histamine overload

Dermatographia + Histamine Intolerance: What’s The Connection?

Histamine intolerance means that your body doesn’t produce enough of an enzyme called diamine oxidase (DAO) to adequately break down histamine within your GI tract. (DAO is the enzyme within your GI tract responsible for breaking down histamine.)

And yes, you can buy DAO enzyme supplements online. But they’re pricey, can be challenging to take + don’t always manage the problem well.

After more than 10 years in clinical practice, I don’t think most people who believe they have histamine intolerance actually do — especially when we’re talking about clients with dermatographia, urticaria + chronic hives.

What I see much more commonly is histamine overload.

Think of histamine overload like a swimming pool. Your body has histamine coming into that pool from multiple different sources. Normally, you should be able to “drain” that pool appropriately.

But what happens when multiple sources are dumping histamine into the pool faster than your body can clear it? Eventually, it overflows. And THAT is when you can become incredibly reactive.

So foods suddenly seem problematic. Heat can set off your skin. Pressure can trigger dermatographia hives. And it can feel like your body has suddenly become intolerant to histamine.

But the bigger question is…

Why is your histamine pool overflowing in the first place?

an empty plate from a restrictive low histamine diet

Why A Low-Histamine Diet May Not Fix Chronic Hives

If you think histamine intolerance is the problem, the logical next step is to try to reduce histamine.

And this is where I see people get stuck.

They start cutting out high-histamine foods. Then another food seems to trigger them, so that goes too. And another. Until eating becomes incredibly restrictive + stressful.

A low-histamine diet may reduce some of the histamine entering your system and provide short-term relief for some people. Antihistamines can also calm histamine-related symptoms.

But neither approach necessarily answers the bigger question of what is driving your histamine levels up in the first place.

That’s why simply trying to “control histamine” can become a trap: You’re constantly trying to stop the pool from overflowing without figuring out why someone left all the faucets running.

Dermatographia Causes: What Could Be Driving Histamine Overload?

This is where looking deeper matters. Histamine overload usually isn’t coming from ONE single thing. There can be several different issues stacking together that create a much bigger problem.

Potential root causes I look at with clients can include:

  • Gut function imbalances
  • Certain types or overgrowths of gut bacteria
  • Hidden parasites
  • Candida overgrowth
  • Liver detoxification challenges
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Environmental exposures
  • Thyroid issues

In fact, what I’ve seen clinically is that people struggling with histamine-reactive skin conditions often have three to six different root causes stacking together.

And that’s important because it explains why the dermatographia treatment or supplement protocol that worked amazingly well for somebody in a Facebook group may do absolutely nothing for you.

Their histamine overload picture isn’t necessarily YOUR picture.

Which is exactly what happened with Sonia.

How Sonia Got Her Dermatographia Hives Under Control

Sonia wanted to dig deeper, but there was another problem: Money. She was on a pretty tight budget + couldn’t afford hundreds of dollars in functional testing.

And this is something I hear about all the time. You know there may be something deeper going on, so you start looking at stool tests, organic acids testing + other functional labs…And suddenly you’re staring at a testing bill that could easily run hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars.

Sonia was able to avoid approximately $500 to $1000 in out-of-pocket testing costs by using the assessments inside my Skin Rash Rebuild program to help narrow down the key areas she needed to focus on.

Her particular root-cause picture included Candida overgrowth, hidden parasites + liver detox issues.

But before you immediately think, “OMG, I must have those too!”…

Sonia’s root causes are NOT necessarily your root causes.

That’s the entire point.

Once she identified her individual pieces + began addressing them, something pretty incredible happened.

Her skin stopped reacting to heat. Pressure stopped triggering her dermatographia rash. And she was eventually able to reintroduce the high-histamine foods she’d been avoiding, including tomatoes + aged cheeses!

She shared with me:

“Joining the Skin Rash Rebuild program was the best thing I could have done. Your program made me feel like myself again, and I’m so thankful. I haven’t cried over my skin issues in months. Thanks to the Skin Rash Rebuild, I’m ME again. And my friends and family have definitely noticed.”

And when I last heard from her, she’d gone to Mexico to celebrate her 30th birthday. Heat. Sunshine. Foods she wanted to eat.

And NO flare. Something that previously would have felt pretty much impossible.

Finding The Right Dermatographia Treatment Starts With YOUR Root Causes

There isn’t one universal root-cause protocol for dermatographia rash or chronic hives.

And that’s actually an incredibly important point.

Because I don’t want you assuming that you need a parasite protocol because Sonia had parasites. Or that Candida MUST be your problem. Or that everyone with chronic urticaria has liver detox issues.

That’s just another form of guessing.

Every skin transformation is custom.

The goal is to identify what is filling YOUR histamine pool so you can start addressing those specific areas rather than spending your life trying to manage the overflow.

Because endlessly removing foods, avoiding triggers + trying another supplement isn’t the same thing as understanding why your system became so reactive.

Ready To Figure Out What’s Driving Your Dermatographia Rash?

If you’re dealing with dermatographia, chronic hives or other unpredictable skin reactions + you want to start figuring out your own hidden root causes, I have an upcoming Fix My Skin Workshop series.

During these LIVE workshops, I’ll walk you through some of the liver + gut connections that can keep people with chronic urticaria, hives, dermatographia + other unpredictable skin issues stuck.

I’ll also share research, testing options + case studies so you can better understand what may be going on beneath the surface.

You’ll also get three self-quizzes to help you look for signs of liver detox overload, Candida overgrowth, and hidden parasite issues.

Plus, I’ll share real client cases so you can see how these pieces can fit together, and you’ll have the opportunity to bring your questions to a live Q&A.

As one previous attendee, Charlotte, shared:

“Wow, you blew my mind. I had no idea all of this was going on. My functional doctor never mentioned any of this. Now I know why nothing worked and what I should be focusing on.”

The Fix My Skin workshop is completely free, but seats for the live sessions are limited.

Frequently Asked Questions for Dermatographia Rash

Frequently Asked Questions for Dermatographia Rash

What is a dermatographia rash?

Dermatographia (also called dermatographism or skin writing) is a type of urticaria where scratching or putting pressure on the skin can trigger raised, itchy welts. Even things like tight clothing or waistbands may be enough to trigger a reaction for some people.

Are dermatographia and chronic hives related?

Yes. Dermatographia is a form of urticaria, which is why dermatographia hives can look + feel similar to other types of hives. With dermatographia, physical pressure or scratching the skin is a common trigger for those raised, itchy welts.

Does dermatographia mean you have histamine intolerance?

Not necessarily. In my clinical experience, symptoms that seem like histamine intolerance may sometimes be better understood as histamine overload — where multiple factors may be contributing to your overall histamine burden faster than your body can adequately clear it.

What causes dermatographia to flare?

Triggers can vary from person to person. Pressure against the skin, scratching + heat may trigger dermatographia hives. But if you’re trying to understand why your system has become so reactive in the first place, I believe it’s worth looking at the bigger picture rather than focusing exclusively on avoiding individual triggers.

Can a low-histamine diet help dermatographia or chronic hives?

Reducing high-histamine foods may help lower your overall histamine load, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a low-histamine diet addresses the underlying reason your histamine “pool” is overflowing. This is why I don’t love seeing people endlessly eliminate more + more foods without investigating what else could be contributing to their symptoms.

What should you investigate if your dermatographia rash won’t go away?

There isn’t one root cause or dermatographia treatment that applies to everyone. In my clinical practice, I look at each person’s unique picture, including potential gut imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, environmental exposures, thyroid issues + other factors that may contribute to histamine overload. The goal isn’t to copy someone else’s protocol — it’s to identify the pieces that may actually matter for YOU.
